Unwinding by Windermere: an overnight stay and spa break at Low Wood Bay.

A spa break and getaway, by definition, is all about relaxation, switching off and enjoying quality time together.

Now, imagine all of this and the natural beauty of the Lake District with its rolling hills and shimmering waters, and you have the most alluring combination.

That’s exactly what awaits you at Low Wood Bay Resort & Spa, a luxurious hotel on the shores of Lake Windermere – the largest lake in England.

It’s got everything you could desire: stylish rooms, spa and fitness facilities, a choice of restaurants and bars, plus its own watersports centre and even a marina – meaning you can enjoy a self-contained escape or use the hotel as a base for your Lake District adventures.

Accommodation

The hotel boasts chic four-star accommodation, with options to suit different tastes.

We stayed in one of its Resort Rooms, housed in the original hotel building. This is where timeless elegance meets those homely vibes. The cute stuffed dog perched on our bed was a lovely welcome. If you want to take this little guy home, you can pay for him when you check out, and 50% is donated to children’s causes in the local community.

For those seeking something more contemporary, the Winander Club rooms, set within a sleek, separate building, offer modern flourishes in the decor and fittings. Think little luxuries such as feature baths and private balconies.

A dreamy spa

Low Wood Bay’s spa offers breathtaking lakeside views – you could say this location is Cumbria’s answer to the French Riviera!

It has not one but two outdoor infinity pools, plus two hot tubs and a sauna that all overlook the gleaming waters of Lake Windermere.

Indoors, you’ll find the thermal spa area featuring a pool, herbal lounge, Himalayan salt sauna, coconut and vanilla steam cabin, and relaxation lounge. Plenty of options to help you reset and rejuvenate.

Help yourself to dinky cubes of brownies or relax with a glass of fizz while gently swaying in a snug egg chair. Pure bliss.

Making the most of your visit

The views from the hotel’s marina are truly special. We enjoyed a short stroll at sunset, with warm amber hues in the sky above. It was magical!

As I previously mentioned, the hotel has several dining options, from wood-fired dishes and seasonal British classics to small plates and burgers. However, we embraced the novelty of room service – a first for us! Our pizza and loaded fries nicely hit the spot.

The next morning, after indulging in pancakes for breakfast in the hotel’s flashy W restaurant, we set our sights beyond the hotel.

We drove to Ambleside, located further north, and took a boat trip. True to Lake District form, it was breezy and rather wet, but you could say this added to the experience!

Back on dry land, Ambleside also has a charming selection of traditional pubs, cafes and independent shops, perfect for whiling away the hours at a gentler pace.
