From strawberry picking to sipping cocktails in the sun, here are five unmissable local experiences you’ll want to add to your summer bucket list.

Summer is finally here, and as I write this blog post, we’re on the brink of a mini heatwave.

There’s no better time to get out and about and explore the best of Newcastle and the wider region. And to help you make the most of the warmer months, I’ve curated my top five irresistible things to do locally.

So, grab your sunnies and SPF, and soak up the Geordie sunshine before it does a runner!

Pick your own strawberries at Brocksbushes Farm

Is there anything more summery than wandering through a sun-drenched field and handpicking your own plump, juicy strawberries? Brocksbushes Farm, just outside Corbridge, is my go-to spot for picking strawbs locally. Look out for plenty of photo opportunities as you make your way around, and don’t forget to have a mooch inside its fabulous farm shop, brimming with local produce, homewares and gifts.

Sip summer cocktails at WC

It’s no secret that WC is one of my favourite bars in Newcastle city centre. Formerly a set of public loos, the bar is a stylish spot for sipping on cocktails beneath its glass roof. Come the summer months, you can also enjoy its luscious cocktails al fresco, with outdoor seating clustered around its entrance on the Bigg Market – ideal for a sunny afternoon tipple.

Treat yourself at Dreamworld Cakes

Tucked away in Newcastle’s cultural hub, the Ouseburn, Dreamworld Cakes is the place to go for a summery sugar rush! My top tip is to try one of their cruffins and grab a table outside where you can watch the world go by and soak up the valley’s eclectic, creative vibe.

Catch a breathtaking sunset at Alnmouth beach

Beach sunsets hit different through the summer months. I love the warm, balmy glow of the sun on my face, with the dreamy swirl of pastel skies above. One of my favourite destinations is Alnmouth, where the beach curves around like a horseshoe. Find a quiet spot on its golden sands nestled among the dunes and watch the sun melt into the horizon. Bliss.

Tuck into brunch with the Earl

Did you know that you can climb Grey’s Monument? It’s 164 steps to the top and the 360-degree views across Newcastle are spectacular! On selected dates throughout the summer, you can scale this architectural landmark, learn about its history and the main man himself – Earl Grey – and then enjoy a delicious brunch at Banyan. Sounds like the perfect way to build up an appetite!
