There’s a new reason to pause during an afternoon shopping trip, as Café 21 at Fenwick Newcastle has introduced a European-inspired Coffee, Cake and Bubbles experience.
Created by restaurateur Terry Laybourne, the concept takes inspiration from the German tradition of Kaffee und Kuchen – the daily ritual of stopping for a catch up over coffee and cake.
A freshly stocked cake counter, prepared each day by Café 21’s pastry team, features German classics such as Black Forest Gâteau and German Apple Cake, alongside an ever-changing selection of seasonal treats.
While the cakes are available throughout the day, the experience is aimed at the traditional Kaffee und Kuchen hours of 3pm-5pm, offering a more relaxed alternative to afternoon tea. For an extra touch of indulgence, guests can also pair their cake with a glass of sparkling wine during those hours.
Terry Laybourne explained: “During my time working in Germany and Switzerland, I loved the tradition of people simply stopping in the afternoon to enjoy coffee, cake and conversation.
“It wasn’t about celebrating a special occasion – it was simply part of everyday life. We wanted to bring that same relaxed sense of enjoyment to Café 21, creating something that’s easy to drop into whenever you fancy a great slice of cake and an excellent coffee.”
So whether you’re catching up with friends, taking a well earned break from a shopping trip or simply craving something sweet, this new daily addition to Cafe 21 is perfect for a spontaneous treat, with no need to book.
