Best brunch spots by the coast, within half an hour of Newcastle

Five of the best brunch destinations scattered along the beautiful North Tyneside coast.
Brunch followed by a breezy walk by the sea is my dream start to a chilled, feel-good weekend.
Thankfully, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Monkseaton are all under a 30-minute drive from Newcastle and, between them, they boast lots of cute cafes and cosy hideaways serving up the best breakfasts and brunches locally.
Here are a few of my favourites that you simply must tick off your list.
Kitchen 91
Kitchen 91 in Monkseaton is where brunching meets those laid-back neighbourhood vibes. It’s the kind of home-from-home setting I crave every Saturday morning.
The cafe serves a tempting brunch menu until midday, when it switches over to its lunch dishes. My top pick is the Superfood Smash with beetroot hummus, avocado, roasted mushrooms, poached eggs, sourdough and sprinkling of chia seeds.
Take note: it’s small and welcoming but that often means you’ll need to pre-book to secure a table.
Rustic Cup on Park View in Whitley Bay describes itself as a speciality coffee shop serving delicious healthy food and drinks. It’s spread over two floors and has nailed those sought-after Instagram vibes.
It serves an all-day brunch menu featuring the likes of breakfast ciabatta, the Rustic full house, root veg wrap, and sweet potato kale cake. Its ‘Rustic favourites’ selection also includes banana bread and Shakshuka, plus lots of sides to customise your dish.
Drinks-wise, you’ll find nutritional lattes, smoothies and kombucha.
The Beach House on Whitley Bay’s promenade has nailed that beachy, coastal-inspired vibe to a tee, complete with an outdoor terrace draped in festoon lights.
It’s a popular brunch and lunch spot, and on my visit, I tucked into brioche French toast with berries, a dollop of Greek yoghurt and honey. Meanwhile, my boyfriend enjoyed a full English brekkie and – Instagram favourite – a Dubai-inspired pistachio hot chocolate. All super satisfying!
This independent cafe in Cullercoats serves traditional breakfasts, lunch and seafood. From fry ups and American pancakes to eggs done in lots of different ways – not to mention cocktails, smoothies and shakes – The Boatyard offers such a great choice.
As you might expect, the interior features a nod to all things boat-related and the space feels welcoming from the moment you step inside. It’s also dog friendly and just a few minutes’ walk from Cullercoats beach.
Kith & Kin is a coastal cafe in Whitley Bay that fills up fast with the brunch crowd, so I recommend pre-booking a table if you can.
Its brunch menu is packed with favourites like salt beef hash, breakfast butties, sweetcorn fritters, and eggs on toast. But its the French toast – topped with crispy streaky bacon, maple syrup, blueberries and bacon fat creme fraiche – that stole the show on my visit.
