Five of the best brunch destinations scattered along the beautiful North Tyneside coast.

Brunch followed by a breezy walk by the sea is my dream start to a chilled, feel-good weekend.

Thankfully, Tynemouth, Whitley Bay and Cullercoats are all under a 30-minute drive from Newcastle and, between them, they boast lots of cute cafes and cosy hideaways serving up the best breakfasts and brunches locally.

Here are a few of my favourites that you simply must tick off your list.

Föda

Föda in Whitley Bay is where brunching meets snuggly hygge vibes.

On the menu, you’ll find simple but ever so tasty plates of brunchy goodness. My top pick is avocado on sourdough toast, with juicy cherry tomatoes, pesto, a smattering of herbs, and crispy streaky bacon. The Eggs Benedict with succulent chunks of rump steak is also a winner.

Their hot chocolates are worth a special mention, with a dusting of chocolate on top – I usually drink two cups each time I visit!

Rustic Cup

Rustic Cup on Park View in Whitley Bay describes itself as a speciality coffee shop serving delicious healthy food and drinks. It’s spread over two floors and has nailed those sought-after Instagram vibes.

It serves an all-day brunch menu featuring the likes of breakfast ciabatta, the Rustic full house, root veg wrap, and sweet potato kale cake. Its ‘Rustic favourites’ selection also includes banana bread and Shakshuka, plus lots of sides to customise your dish.

Drinks-wise, you’ll find nutritional lattes, smoothies and kombucha.

Meet Me on the Corner

Meet Me on the Corner is a popular cafe and bistro in Whitley Bay – and true to its name, it’s nestled on the corner of Ilfracombe Gardens.

The decor is all kinds of pretty inside; it feels proper homely. It serves an all-day brunch menu with additional lunch options from 12pm and also does afternoon tea.

On my visit, I tucked into an Italian chicken burger with Parma ham and buffalo mozzarella, and my boyfriend went for the Korean steak and egg.

The Boatyard

This independent cafe in Cullercoats serves traditional breakfasts, lunch and seafood. From fry ups and American pancakes to eggs done in lots of different ways – not to mention cocktails, smoothies and shakes (just LOOK at these scrumptious concoctions!) – The Boatyard offers such a great choice.

As you might expect, the interior features a nod to all things boat-related and the space feels welcoming from the moment you step inside. It’s also dog friendly and just a few minutes’ walk from Cullercoats beach.

Toast

Located on Tynemouth’s bustling Front Street, Toast is a modern cafe, bar and pizzeria.

House beans on toast, eggy focaccia, salt beef reuben crumpet, smoked haddock and leek hash, Turkish eggs, croque madam…its brunch menu has all sorts of savoury delights, served until 3pm. You’ll also find a variety of sweet treats over the counter.
