Sunday lunch at The Tanners Arms, where Sundays never tasted so good.
~ Advertorial ~
The Tanners Arms is a longstanding (but definitely not hidden) gem within the Ouseburn.
Situated at the top of Stepney Bank on Byker Bridge, the pub is the gateway to this bustling cultural quarter in Newcastle. You could say it sets the tone for what you’ll find as you stroll down into the depths of the valley and breeze past the funky wall murals, creative studios and plethora of independent venues.
The Tanners Arms is where the charm of a traditional pub meets all things effortlessly cool. Think of it as a home from home, but categorically not drab.
Indoors, the decor is understated and cosy, with the bar area the centre piece. You can also sit outside on the sprawling pavement and watch cars chugging along, or enjoy a drink on its more secluded urban roof terrace.
The Sunday lunch menu
It’s award-winning.
It can be booked up 6 weeks in advance.
And it’s all over foodie Facebook groups and review sites.
Yep, The Tanners Arms’ Sunday roasts are as popular as they come here in Newcastle.
The portion sizes are generous and the food – to simply put it – is so well cooked and seasoned.
Roasties, mash, carrots, parsnip, greens, a giant Yorkshire pudding and lashings of gravy – you get all the trimmings here.
Fancy extra? The Tanners Arms has got this covered too, with pigs in blankets and stuffing balls, and our fave: gooey cauliflower cheese. Order a portion for yourself or a larger one for sharing.
As for the star attraction, we tucked into the honey, thyme and lemon chicken (its tasty, crispy skin gets the thumbs up emoji from me) and slow cooked, melt in the mouth beef brisket. So tender that the meat fell apart after a little prod of my boyfriend’s fork.
Some of the other options on the Sunday lunch menu include maple and mustard glazed gammon; mince and cheesy dumplings; belly pork and crackling fingers; and cheese and leek sausages, all priced between £14.95 and £15.95.
You’ll also find mushroom and walnut suet pudding, and vegan mince and dumplings.
Peering at the plates in front of our fellow diners, the other dishes looked just as delish. My FOMO vibes spiked every time I saw another roast dinner being whisked out from the kitchen!
The verdict
This Sunday lunch menu is one of the best in the city, and I don’t make that kinda statement on a whim. Just look at my Insta feed (or this blog post rounding up top Sunday roasts locally) and you’ll see just how much I enjoy this weekend foodie pleasure.
The good news is that The Tanners Arms dishes up this menu on Bank Holiday Mondays too, so this might be a good chance to nab a coveted table and sample all their Sunday goodness for yourself. (Play my Instagram Reel below to see what you can expect!)
