An unforgettable stay at Newton Hall, where down-to-earth luxury meets the rugged beauty of Northumberland.
The chance to toast marshmallows over a flickering fire beneath a starry night sky was one of the first things that drew me to Newton Hall’s Garden Rooms.
For me, winter is all about being snug, appreciating those slower, calmer moments, and enjoying the crisp cold weather this season brings, and a little staycation here promised to tick all these boxes and much more (weather forecast dependent, of course!).
This was our second stay at Newton Hall – a luxury wedding venue and boutique hotel in Northumberland. However, we were keen to experience something new this time and swapped its quirky deluxe rooms for one of its cute cabins.
Luxury cabins
Despite its name, the Garden Room is, in fact, a self-contained cabin.
There are 27 clustered together, just 50 metres from Newton Hall’s main house. They look ultra-modern from the outside thanks to their striking angular roofs. But, once we stepped inside, we were greeted by a kitsch decor with pops of pink and green, and floral prints sprawled across the ceilings.
We stayed in one of the larger cabins, which featured a spacious open plan living area comprising a super comfy bed, TV, wardrobe, sofa, coffee table, and a small kitchen (with a hob and fridge), and an en suite bathroom. The pink sink was rather fetching!
A large wall-to-wall window provided lovely views of our private outdoor space, which included wooden chairs, a bench, chiminea and hot tub.
This petite nook within the Newton Hall estate was framed by a stone wall and trees, so we were completely unaware of the neighbouring cabins to either side, which are spaced a good distance apart.
A chilled evening
We purchased a s’mores kit from the main reception, priced at £12, and then it was time to get the chiminea lit using logs that had already been provided.
This was exactly how I had pictured it; my cheeks aflush while I gorged on oozy, melting marshmallows while sipping on a glass of Buck’s Fizz.
Other special extras on offer include a romantic turn down (with petals, candles and Prosecco), a cocktail kit, and chocolate dipped strawberries.
As the clear sky fully darkened, we took a dip in our hot tub and enjoyed a soak beneath the moonlight and put our star constellation app to good use!
The fluffy robes and slippers were also a lovely touch.
It was so blissful and relaxing. It felt like we were in our very own pocket of Northumberland, in the middle of nowhere.
Breakfast at The Joiners Arms
Our stay also included breakfast at The Joiners Arms, one of Newton Hall’s sister venues.
It’s a short five-minute walk away. You just need to cut through the myriad of cabins and onto a caravan site before entering the small village where the gastro pub is located.
The Joiners Arms is brimming with snuggly, rustic vibes and it also has its own accommodation on-site.
For breakfast, you can choose from a good variety of continental style options; think pastries, charcuterie, cheese, cereals, granola, yoghurt and fruit.
There’s also a hot food menu, which is available at no extra cost. I enjoyed a portion of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, while my boyfriend had buttermilk pancakes with streaky bacon and maple syrup.
Having also eaten here in the evening, I can vouch for its main meals too! Top tip: the fish and chips are delish.
A romantic destination
If you like your overnight stays intimate and cosy with a dash of nature literally a sliding door away, then the Garden Rooms have got you covered.
What I also love about a getaway at Newton Hall is that it’s close to Low Newton beach, which is one of my favourite stretches of sand in Northumberland.
After checking out of our cabin, we headed here for a morning walk, soaking up the salty air and all the drama of Dunstanburgh Castle in the distance.
The perfect end to our trip, and winter wanderlust at its finest.
