Fancy fresh pasta delivered straight to your door? Pasta Evangelists has arrived in Newcastle to bring a taste of Italy into the comforts of your own home.
The multi-million pound business was set up in 2016 with one mission in mind: to bring fresh, high-quality pastificio-style pasta to the masses across Britain.
And now it’s the Toon’s turn to enjoy its artisan pasta creations at the tap of a delivery app button.
As it happens, the company was co-founded by local lad Finn Lagun, who grew up in Fenham. In 2023, he made it into the prestigious Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list, and just a few years earlier, appeared on Dragons’ Den to pitch for a £75k investment. He left empty handed but this didn’t hinder the company’s success one bit, as Pasta Evangelists went on to generate more than £21m in revenue and was subsequently acquired by international pasta producer, Barilla.
There’s another notable local connection worth mentioning for the foodies among you; Finn’s dad owns popular local pub and top Sunday lunch destination, the Earl of Pitt Street. So, you could say it was about time Finn got back to his Geordie roots to launch a delivery service here in Newcastle!
About the pasta delivery service
Thanks to Pasta Evangelists’ new ‘cucina’ in the city centre, if you live or work nearby, you can now order fresh pasta for delivery via UberEats and Deliveroo.
Dishes include tasty beef shin and Chianti ragu; seabass, lemon zest and mascarpone ravioli; sun-dried tomato and almond pesto; and truffle mac and cheese, plus many others.
As you might expect, their pasta is made using the finest Italian flour and crafted into numerous shapes by hand. They also try to source ingredients locally where possible, ensuring the dishes are the freshest they can be.
A pasta-making experience
To mark its launch in Newcastle earlier this month, the company’s head chef Roberta d’Elia hosted a pasta-making class, where she shared her insider tips on all things pasta.
Did you know, there are more than 250 different pasta shapes?
On the night, I chose their beef shin to accompany my bowl of handmade pasta. The beef was so flavourful and having just returned from a two-week holiday in Italy a few days before, this instantly transported me back!
At the moment, there’s no plans to host more pasta workshops here in Newcastle but watch this space. Alternatively, you could travel down to their acclaimed Pasta Academy in London, where they run beginner and advanced classes alongside specially themed workshops inspired by the traditional cuisines of Bologna, Tuscany, Umbria and Sicily.
Takeaway treats and recipe kits
It’s not just scrummy pasta available for delivery – you can also choose from a delicious range of starters, sides, and classic Italian desserts. Think delights such as garlic focaccia, burrata, aubergine parmigiana, tiramisu, cherry amarena, and lemon tart.
The delivery area in Newcastle is currently quite small, so if you fall outside this radius or fancy cooking a meal at home instead, recipe kits are available from the Pasta Evangelists website too. The kits are reasonably priced and include the likes of classic Carbonara, Pomodoro sauce with rigatoni, and lasagne alla Portofino.
If you have yet to experience the joy of fresh pasta with its signature soft texture and rich flavour, you will definitely taste the difference compared to the dry stuff. And Pasta Evangelists can make the perfect introduction to this ‘fantastico’ world of artisan pasta and authentic Italian cuisine.
